Parallel Shadows

"Oh God, not again! Sam, get back here this instant," Karen shouted, chasing her son into the attic. Sam vanished into a hidden room. Karen followed, gasping, and found herself in the attic, but something was different.

"Mom?" Sam said, his voice tinged with confusion.

Karen's eyes darted around the unfamiliar setting. "Who are you?" asked an alarmed voice.

"Sam, come here!" Karen's voice trembled.

The other Karen watched in silence, bewildered. As Karen reached for Sam, she realized that this wasn't a game. She was in a parallel world, and bringing Sam back might tear their realities apart.
